In search of wild bass part II 21/09/2011

The search for new bass water has continued this week with each new spot revealing some gems. This spot unfortunately has a dam downstream that stops the bass getting back up into the head waters and it's resident's are probably only eels and spangled perch. After last years huge rainfall and signs of flood debris at least 5 metres up from the waters surface I wouldn't be surprised if everything was washed out downstream into the dam. Anyway it was a beautiful spot and nice and cool with lots of shady moss covered banks.

Quick mid morning sess on the perch

A slim bass for his length

A pretty little spangled perch

Bass on a 2 inch berley grub

Remnant sub tropical forest

Had a quick session on this morning with only an hour to kill. Being around 9 oclock most of the water was in full sun and only one small accessible patch of water with shade - oh well nothing better to do so I'll give it a try. Armed with my spin stick 4 lb fireline and 9 lb leader and the ever reliable blade I made my way round the edge to get a better position. First cast a half hearted bump - maybe a small spangled perch. Chuck it in again -BANG -I'm on. A nice little bass comes to hand after being pulled out from under the weed edge - quick pic and off he goes to grow bigger. Blade back in the same spot bang I'm on again but feels pretty small - up comes a spangled perch. Another quick pic and off he goes. A few casts around the lilies further out in the sun didn't produce so next cast I put a soft plastic in  closer to the bank under the overhanging tree and I'm on again - another nice little bass. A couple of more spanglies and I reckon their onto me by now so home for a cuppa. Cheers Pat.

Search for new water 12/09/2011

After a bit of searching on google earth and the street directory I settled on an area to search for some wild bass. The area chosen required a walk across a floodplain for about 20 mins. under the watchful eye of the cattle to reach the main channel. There was a bit of colour in the water but not too bad so I'll stick with using the Ray's Outdoors Blades - 3.5gm yellow/orange. There were limited areas to cast from the bank but there were plenty of snags to cast to so after about an hour I onto my first fish. The bank is quite high in places so I had to steretch out with the rod to stop the fish going under the bankside log. He had other ideas and pulled the hooks after going into some sticky snag. I headed upstream a bit more and then went back to the spot I dropped the fish. Put the blade in the same place and I'm on again, this time I pole it up the bank. A pretty healthy looking fish around 27-28cm. An interesting day anyway. Pat
